The Galveston Pest Season, Month by Month
When mosquitoes, termites, ants and rodents peak on the island, and how to stay a step ahead of each.
On a subtropical island, something is always active, but each pest still has its season. Knowing when Galveston's pests peak lets you stay a step ahead instead of reacting after they are already inside. Here is the coastal calendar, month by month.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is termite swarm season. Warm, humid days after rain send Formosan and subterranean termites out in swarms, and finding discarded wings near your windows is a red flag. Ants wake up and start trailing, and mosquitoes begin breeding as the standing water warms. It is the best time for a termite inspection and to knock down mosquito breeding sites before summer.
Summer (June to August)
Peak season for almost everything. Salt-marsh mosquitoes are relentless, roaches thrive in the heat and humidity, and fire ants and crazy ants are at full strength across island yards. This is when recurring service earns its keep, keeping the pressure down through the worst of it.
Fall (September to November)
As nights cool, rodents start looking for a way indoors, so roof rats and mice pick up. Mosquitoes stay active well into fall on the coast, and storm season can leave behind standing water and moisture that spikes pest activity. Sealing entry points now pays off all winter.
Winter (December to February)
The island's mild winters never fully shut pests down. Rodents are most likely to be indoors, roaches keep going in warm kitchens and drains, and the humidity keeps silverfish and other damp-lovers active. Winter is a good time to seal gaps and stay on a plan rather than assume the bugs are gone.
The coastal wildcard: storms
Any big rain or storm resets the mosquito clock with fresh standing water and can drive pests indoors as they flee the wet. After a storm is a smart time to check for standing water and call for a follow-up. For local, science-based pest information, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is an excellent resource.
